Karleigh & Sydney
Saturday night we went over to our friends Karie and Jeff's for dinner and Sydney's first play date where she actually (sort of) plays. Karleigh is two months older than Sydney, and she is everywhere! Crawling, flying around in her walker - it is quite the entertainment for Sydney who couldn't get enough of watching her work her way around the house. It was so cute to see them interact, and then immediately lose interest in one another. Sydney so badly wants to crawl like Karleigh!
Karleigh enjoyed taking Sydney's pacifier out of her mouth over and over. They use the same kind, so you could tell they each thought the other had theirs.

Yellow jumping bean
When we pick out Sydney's clothes and get her dressed each day (a process I love), I try to figure out what her best colors are --- we all have them! My mom has said she likes yellow on her, which is funny considering I don't care for yellow on myself. This past Friday, Sydney wore an outfit sent to her by her great-grandma Gorman. And I must say the yellow looked adorable!
Later that night, after she was in comfier clothes that didn't match quite so well, we let her play in her new favorite thing: the doorway jumping contraption (not the official name, I'm sure - ha!). She didn't like this thing until a couple of weeks ago, and her teacher mentioned that she loves it now. The only problem is that it doesn't fit on the larger moldings, so we can only hang it near bedrooms and bathrooms. It's a great place to put her if only one of us is home and needs to take a shower. Here's a look at our jumping bean.

Heat relief!
It has been so hot around here lately, and today we finally got a break. High temps were in the mid-80s, and it's supposed to stick around for a few days! As soon as we got home, we headed out for a walk. Sydney was happy and so was mama. Daddy is at the golf course, taking advantage of the cooler weather, too. He missed all the fun ;-)

Forward thinking
Sydney has been rolling all over the place for weeks, and she has now started to show signs of crawling. Her current technique is more of a slithering motion, but she is moving forward and getting what she wants. She isn't sure what to do once she is up on all fours, so she resorts to sliding along instead. It won't be long before she's officially a 'crawler.' You'll notice that we have a million toys, and she prefers the calculator and the bulb syringe (which we should have never given her). My friend Tracey's little girl first crawled for a whisk, so I guess everyone has their thing. :-)
Here is one video from yesterday evening, and two from this evening. The third one is just of her playing, and I thought it was cute!

Aaaand we're back
We returned home yesterday afternoon after a long 13 days away. Sydney spent the time in Virginia with her Grandma and her Meme (they split the week) and they had a ball. She was an angel according to everyone! She met several extended family members, and got the grand tour of our hometown.
Randall and I were on a cruise with the Povar side of my family - 15 folks - to San Juan, St. Thomas and St. Maarten (our favorite). It was fabulous. The sites were beautiful, the food was awesome, and the overall experience was wonderful. The ship we were on, the Celebrity Solstice, was the largest and most elegant ship I've been on. The occasion was to celebrate 65 years of marriage for my grandparents! Here's a quick look at the way we spent the week. No complaints other than poor Randall getting sick the last two days. Fortunately he was fully recovered in time to see Sydney who we missed SO MUCH. (Oh, and the fact that our camera decided to delete the photos from the first 2/3 of our trip. We're piecing together the memories from family members' photos.)Randall is back at work today, but Sydney's school was closed today which earned me an extra day off - thank goodness. There is a lot of unpacking and organizing to do around here! Staying busy will help with the homesickness that always follows time with our families. It's good to be home, but visits are never, ever long enough!

Bon Voyage!
The Strickland family will be MIA from the blog world for awhile. It's time for our big summer vacation. Finally! Many pictures and stories to follow.
